Peter Brown

Director, Irish Research Council

Peter is Director of the Irish Research Council. The Council is an associated agency of the Department of Education and Skills and is charged with funding excellent research across all disciplines, enabling a vibrant research community and the development of diverse expertise. He joined the Council as Deputy Director in early 2015. In addition to having responsibility for the implementation of the Council’s gender strategy and action plan, Peter works with transnational gender initiatives, in particular Gender-Net (FP7) and more recently Gender-Net Plus. Prior to his Council roles he held a number of different positions in the Higher Education Authority going back to 2003. In addition to research, his work in higher education has spanned access and widening participation, skills and labour market activation and enterprise engagement. His early career was spent in industry in the UK, and following return to Ireland worked in the community sector. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree and MSc., both from University College Dublin.
